Alternatives to Meditation

Monday, July 25, 2016

We all need a way to help ourselves deal with our anxiety and stress. Not everyone likes meditation, and that's completely okay. Here are some suggestions for those of you that don't feel a connection or interest in meditation. Enjoy and I hope this inspires you! (I'll be posting the meditation writing in a few weeks' time)

1) Writing/Journaling
I've written previously on the benefits of journaling and writing, you can find it here: writing.
The physical act of writing can help get you out of your head.

2) Coloring
Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure you've noticed that adult coloring books are everywhere! Remember being a kid, laying down on the floor, and just coloring? How did that make you feel? I know for me personally, it gave (and still gives me) a sense of peace. Coloring complex patterns can also ease anxiety, so why not give it a try?

3) Yoga
A little more physical than the latter, yoga is a great way to incorporate mind and body. There's a plethora of yoga books out there, along with free videos on YouTube, if you'd like something that is a little more bodily orientated, definitely give this a try! Just remember, if you can't do a pose right away, it's okay! Take your time and let your body adjust to trying new positions. I've been practicing yoga for about 13 years or so now, and I still enjoy it.
